Registering a Death

Our bereavement team can assist with this process if the person died in the hospital. If the death has been referred to the coroner then there is a different process which the coroner’s office will assist with.

Before a death certificate can be issued the death must be scrutinised by a medical examiner.

A medical examiner is a senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths. They will speak to the consultants, and other medical professionals to ensure that a cause of death can be established, that the cause of death is accurate and decide whether any further investigation is required. They will refer cases to the coroner’s office if they think this is necessary. A medical examiners officer will contact you to discuss the cause of death and ascertain whether you have any further concerns.
