Our consultant, Professor Gideon Mlawa, has been recognised for his outstanding dedication, leadership and contribution to global health.

He was presented with his award at the UK-Africa Health Summit by Jim Campbell, Director of Health Workforce at the World Health Organisation.

Gideon, said:

It was in recognition for the work we’ve been undertaking at our Trust over the last few years in support of global health.

I very much feel this award is not just for me, it’s for everyone at our Trust who has been supporting this work, including our Chief Executive and Chief Medical Officer.

This included our first Global Health event, held at Queen’s Hospital in December 2024, to celebrate the work being done to improve health in a number of countries, including Tanzania, Zanzibar and Bangladesh.

We’ve also brought together clinicians across our Trust and Barts Health by creating a North East London Overseas Group.

And Gideon, who is a founding member of the Tanzania UK Healthcare Diaspora Association, led a trip to Africa last year accompanied by colleagues including our Chief Nurse, Kathryn Halford, and Chief Medical Officer, Andrew Deaner.

He added:

We’ve been doing online teaching sessions, sharing learning between our Trust and institutions in Africa. Western hospitals can learn a lot from other countries who are providing good care despite limited resources.

This work allows us to support healthcare in other countries, while we also benefit from sharing experiences and knowledge.

Gideon was joined at the summit, held in London on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 March, by our Chief Executive, Matthew Trainer, and colleagues Manpreet Sahemey and Danny Lunda Ngandu.
