From hospital work experience to senior leader
We are pleased to announce that following a competitive selection process, Mike Gilham has been appointed as our new Chief Financial Officer. He’ll take over from Nick Swift who, after nearly six years at our Trust, is off to travel around the world.
Mike grew up in Upminster, went to school in Hornchurch and did work experience at Oldchurch Hospital (now replaced by Queen’s Hospital). After university, he worked across the NHS, including at Great Ormond Street and Barts Health. He’s also worked for the strategic finance team at NHS England and was the Head of Finance for North East and North Central London.
Married with two children, Mike joined our Trust in 2019 and has been Director of Finance in recent years.
Mike said:
“I’m excited about my new role and pleased that I’ve been given this opportunity to give back to the community where I grew up. I am passionate about delivering for patients through improving our finances and the services we offer residents.”
Commenting on the appointment, Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive said:
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with Nick. I’ve benefitted from his experience, insight, and his focus, as Chief Financial Officer, on getting the best for our patients.
“I’m delighted Mike will now drive forward our work to improve the quality of care at BHRUT, exit financial special measures, and cut waste in our hospitals so we can invest more in services.
“It’s fantastic to see someone from a local school who started here on work experience make it into this Board level role. Mike is a great appointment and we’re delighted to have him on the executive team.”
