Future doctors, nurses and scientists to descend on Queen’s Hospital

Queen’s Hospital will be encouraging schoolchildren to think about working in the NHS when it holds a careers fair for pupils from across Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge. It’s expected that around 1,300 children from local primary and secondary schools will attend the event on Wednesday 3 July.

They’ll be able to speak to staff from across our Trust about what they do and discover what qualifications they need for their dream job.

There will be talks from nurses in different areas of the profession, including paediatric, learning disability and palliative care, and a talk from one of our doctors in obstetrics and gynaecology.

It’s part of a series of events, we’re calling ‘Celebrating BHRUT’, that we are arranging for our staff and their families, our volunteers and our local communities.

As part of our commitment to working closely with local partners, we’ll be inviting 70 stakeholders to a collaborative event on Tuesday 16 July when we’ll look at how we can work together to support regeneration across north east London. This will focus on education and employment opportunities, investing in local businesses, the environment, and addressing inequalities.

Our volunteers are a hugely important part of our team and we will be recognising them with a special lunch on Thursday 11 July when around 200 dedicated volunteers are likely to attend.

We’ll be recognising and celebrating our staff with lots of different events throughout this period, including a staff awards ceremony; a graduation event for those who have completed further education and training; and a long-service awards ceremony.

As we did last year, when the NHS marked its 75th birthday, we’ll also be celebrating by inviting staff along to some fun events including a special breakfast, afternoon tea, evening party and a family fun day.

We will also take the time to pause and reflect when we hold a memorial service to commemorate colleagues who have died.

Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, said: “Celebrating BHRUT is a great opportunity to welcome our communities in and recognise and thank our teams for the work they do caring for patients.

“We hope our local schoolchildren will be inspired to work in the NHS in the future and that with our partners we can come up with new ways of improving the health and lives of residents across the boroughs we serve.”

Most of the celebrating BHRUT events will take place in a marquee erected in front of Queen’s Hospital.
