500th resident receives life-saving lung check

Targeted Lung Health Check Programme in Barking and Dagenham has seen 500 residents

More than 500 Barking and Dagenham residents have taken advantage of a free opportunity to have their lungs scanned, following the launch of a national NHS Targeted Lung Health Check programme.

The programme was launched in July across Barking and Dagenham and provides free lung checks for people aged between 55-74 who are current or former smokers.

Dr Rebecca Taylor, Clinical Director for the Targeted Lung Health Check Programme in north east London, said: “We are very pleased with the uptake of the programme so far, with many residents taking advantage of this free opportunity.

“We are aiming to find out how well your lungs are working and to rule out any serious conditions. Finding out early can make any treatment simpler and more successful. The scan itself is simple, safe and takes less than a minute. It’s really important for people to respond to the instructions on their invite letter.”

Dr Rajesh Banka, a Consultant Respiratory Physician at our Trust, said: “I’m delighted that residents are coming forward and choosing to get their lungs checked, as part of this free, vital service.

“The Lung Health Check programme will save lives, so if you are contacted for your appointment, please do accept.”
