Stakeholder update from Chief Executive Matthew Trainer: 1 April 2022

Over the past 12 months, we’ve kept you informed about how our closer collaboration with Barts Health is designed to deliver better, quicker and more effective services for residents across north east London (NEL).  One example of this beneficial impact is the fact that 3,000 people in NEL were treated more quickly this winter.

I’m pleased to share with you today some other updates. Both trusts have announced the appointment of two Vice Chairs for their respective boards. Adam Sharples will take on the role at Barts Health and Mehboob Khan, who is already a non-executive director (NED) at our Trust, has been confirmed as our Vice Chair. Adam and Mehboob will support Jacqui Smith, our Chair-in-common, and will play a vital role in deepening our closer working.

I’m also delighted to welcome Marta Phillips as a NED. Marta is on the board of several organisations and will be a great addition to our Trust. Lesley Seary, one of our NEDs and acting Chief Executive of Redbridge Council, has also joined the board at Barts.

Health Secretary visits Barking Community Hospital

While we strengthen our relationship with Barts, we are also working closely with all of our other partners across NEL.

The Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Barking Community Hospital (BCH) is an example of this and the investment of £11 million pounds there will ensure more people receive the scans, the treatment and the care they need closer to where they live.

We’ve been highlighted nationally for our innovative drive to reduce our waiting lists and I was pleased to welcome Sajid Javid, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, to our seven day a week CDC at BCH.

Please do take a look at my latest video diary where I highlight that Mr Javid was shown how our Trust is working with colleagues in NEL, as one NHS team, to provide residents with additional diagnostic services.

Kind regards,

Matthew Trainer
Chief Executive
