Stakeholder update from Chief Executive Matthew Trainer: 21 June 2024

Dear colleague,

As you may well have seen we’ve announced that we’re closing our multi-storey car park at Queen’s to carry out essential improvement works.

Independent health and safety inspectors reviewed the car park and found significant concerns. They recommended that we carry out the work or risk having to shut it permanently.

The car park will be closed to patients and visitors for three weeks from Saturday 20 July to Saturday 10 August. It will then reopen in stages.
We understand the disruption this will cause, but the works will make it safer, more accessible, and more pleasant with upgraded lighting and clearly marked walkways.

During this time, our advice is to avoid driving to the hospital if possible.
Residents with blue badges, cancer patients, dialysis patients and those entitled to concessionary parking will be unaffected.

There will also be emergency parking available for women who are about to give birth. All other patients should travel by alternative means, such as using one of the eight bus routes that come into the hospital grounds.

Drop off spaces will remain available in the usual places outside the Urgent Treatment Centre, maternity and near to the main entrance.

In order to minimise the impact of this temporary closure we are carrying out the work during the school summer holidays, as this is the time when we have the lowest attendances at Queen’s.

We will have members of staff at the front of the hospital to make sure that people who are unwell are cared for appropriately, and this will of course not affect people who are brought in by ambulance.

We have responded to feedback from residents and you can find our latest information on our car parking page on our website.

Please get in touch if you’ve got any further questions.

I hope you have a great weekend.

Matthew Trainer
Chief Executive
