Donna Ockenden, a senior midwifery adviser for the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), visited our Maternity department at Queen’s Hospital today (Thursday 11 October).

During her time with us she visited our post-natal ward where she spoke to new parents about their experience.

First-time mum Laura White, 32, who had recently given birth to son Oliver with husband Thomas at her side, said: “We’ve had a really positive experience. We’ve been kept up-to-date and reassured which has been good, especially since we are first time parents.

“Everything was well explained and there seems to be a good handover of information between staff.”

Donna’s visit was an opportunity to speak to our midwives and find out more about their roles and experiences, which can be used to help improve the NMC in its role as a regulator.

She said: “I’ve heard and seen so much good practice. The highlights have been the peaceful nature of the Snowdrop Bereavement Suite, the support provided to newly qualified midwives, and the care shown to patients in labour.

“The department feels peaceful and calm and despite being very busy, it’s very well organised.”
