Worried parents with little ones on the children’s wards at Queen’s Hospital can sleep a little easier at their bedside – thanks to 30 colourful new fully reclining chairs.

The chairs were bought with a generous donation from Abridge Golf Club, after its ladies’ section held a fundraising golf day.

Parents can recline the new chairs until they are fully flat, giving them somewhere to get a better night’s sleep without leaving their child’s side.

Frances Frost was one of the first to try out the new chairs, spending almost a week sleeping by her seven-year-old daughter’s side.

She said: “It was lovely to be able to stay at her bedside, and it was nice to have somewhere to lie down.

“They are fabulous and I like that they’re bright and colourful, it’s certainly much better that sitting up in a chair all night.”

The golf club ladies, including Lesley Allsuch and Pam Levine, choose a charity to support each year and felt strongly that parents should have something to sleep on when staying close to their children in hospital.

They raised £22,000 with a ladies’ golf day, including a luncheon and dinner, which was presented to our charity. They were also supported by local businesses and the community with some great raffle prizes.

Gill Watson, Senior Sister on Tropical Lagoon children’s ward, said:

“We’ve been on a long journey to improve our facilities and the Abridge Golf Club ladies come along and granted our wishes.“The parents are all very happy, so thank you so much.”

The new chairs will also be introduced on the children’s wards at King George Hospital soon.
