‘Hey doc, where does my blood go’ – new scheme for children is one of our June improvement highlights

A new scheme for children who regularly have blood tests, to allow them to see what happens to their blood, is one of the key highlights in our June progress report.

Our monthly update shows how we are making our hospitals better for our patients, as we set out to do through our improvement plan Delivering our Potential.

The scheme, launched by our Pathology department, invites children with long-term conditions which require regular blood tests behind the scenes in our lab. Our staff then show them the processes their blood samples go through.

We’ve also made our hospitals safer for our patients by improving our local induction rate from 74 per cent to 93 per cent – this means more of our locum staff are aware of our protocols and processes and can give more efficient, safer care to our patients.

Other highlights in the report include positive feedback from an external peer review of our critical care services, and a huge amount of work which went into making our Radiology department better which led to us taking it out of internal special measures.

We’re delighted more patients are also likely to recommend our services. We introduced iWantGreatCare to run our staff and patient experience surveys and a range of initiatives including drop-in sessions saw the percentage of people who would recommend us go up a per cent from 88.50 to 89.90%.

And staff on our Elder’s Receiving Unit have worked hard to increase the number of patients receiving harm free care to 95 per cent – up from 87 per cent in May. Harm free care means we are protecting our patients from four common conditions in hospitals – pressure ulcers, falls, urinary tract infections and venous thromboembolism (blood clots).
