Huai Shen Phen has raised £3,286 for the ward at Queen’s Hospitals where he was cared for after being treated for a brain abscess.

The father-of-two undertook a grueling triathlon less than a year after being treated for the abscess.

He said: “It was very difficult and took me ages - my body is not the same as it was 10 years ago when I did triathlons!

“I wanted to do it as I was so grateful for the care I received and that I’ve recovered well. Some of my colleagues from my time at Queen’s were still there so it was unusual to be their patient, but they took really good care of me.”

Huai, who is a now a GP in Harlow where he also lives, was a junior doctor at Oldchurch Hospital and moved to Queen’s Hospital when we relocated in 2006 to work on our neurosurgery unit.

He had gone to his local emergency department when he had a headache lasting several days and also got double vision and paralysis down one side last October.

An MRI scan showed the abscess and he was transferred to Queen’s Hospital and our specialist neurological centre.

The 35-year-old was in hospital for six weeks and was also off work for several months to recover, returning on a phased basis in May this year.

He decided on a triathlon, which includes a cycle, swim and run, to raise money after he took part in them 10 years ago, and because he thought it would be a better option than a marathon!

He added: “It was absolutely exhausting. I was most comfortable on the swim as I did a lot of that when I was younger. The run at the end was the hardest bit.

“My family came along to support me and family, friends and colleagues have been really generous with their donations.”

All the money Huai has raised will be spent on improvements to our Sahara B ward where he was treated, making it even better for future patients.
