Dying Matters Week starts on Monday

Do your loved ones know what you would like to happen when you die? If not, Dying Matters Week, between 14-20 May, could be the time to have those tricky conversations.

This year, during Dying Matters Week, the question posed last year - “what would you do” - has been extended to incorporate the community.

Each year the awareness week provides a platform for people to have discussions with their families that might not otherwise happen. The main goal is to clarify peoples’ wishes, needs and preferences and deliver care to meet these needs.

Advance Care Planning is the term used to describe the conversation between people, their families and carers and those looking after them about their future wishes and priorities for care. It’s a key means of improving care for people nearing the end of life and of enabling better planning and provision of care, to help them live well and die well in the place and the manner of their choosing. It enables people to discuss and record their future health and care wishes and also to appoint someone as an advocate or surrogate, thus making the likelihood of these wishes being known and respected at the end of life.

This year we have teamed up with Saint Francis Hospice, located in Havering-atte-Bower, to ensure we speak to as many people as possible about their final wishes. There will be people to talk to in both of our hospitals sites of Queen’s and King George, and also in some of the Saint Francis Hospice retail stores throughout the week – we’re also jointly providing workshops for healthcare professionals, with a view to helping them full understand the importance of Advance Care Planning, and how they can support their patients with it.
