Choose our next area for improvement

The PRIDE Way logo

The PRIDE Way logo We’re ready to select our next value stream (improvement area) through our partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute (VMI) - and we want your views.

We’ve used information from complaints, serious incidents and other feedback mechanisms to identify three areas where we know we need to do better – now it’s over to you choose one. Your views really matter so please get involved - complete our one minute survey. It closes on 15 February. In the meantime find out what we’ve improved so far.

The story so far: The Pride Way and our first two value streams

Through our partnership with VMI we’ve developed The Pride Way, an approach to working that enables our staff to make the changes that really add value to our patients. It also provides a methodology to review and streamline our processes consistently across our hospitals.

Our first two value streams you helped select were The First 24hrs (for frail, elderly patients) and Diagnostic Processes, and  The Pride Way methodology has been put to good practice during our rapid process improvement workshops (RPIWs) for these areas.

During the four RPIWs we’ve held to date, our staff have driven improvements to the care we provide to our patients, with the support of our dedicated patient partners.

These include:

  • An enhanced board round in our Elders’ Receiving Unit so that all patients have their end-of-life needs considered, ultimately allowing them to be treated where they prefer
  • Development of an “inevitable admissions” pathway so they get faster access to specialist healthcare professionals including doctors, nurses and therapists
  • Reduced time to prepare biopsy samples for analysis by around 75%, from 22 hours to 5 hours 30mins
  • Faster turnaround times for booking guided biopsies and all requests are now reviewed by consultant radiologists in a daily huddle.

We’ll keep you posted as we continue to make further improvements.

Working in partnership

We’ll also be launching a joint value stream focused on Discharge Processes as part of an initiative between the five participating trusts in the VMI programme. Watch this space for more information.
