Baby marks 100th day at hospital – then gets to go home

If anyone deserved a fuss when they reached 100 days old, little Ronnie Norman did.

Since his birth in April, he’d stayed in three different hospitals and hadn’t seen his home – so our staff at Queen’s Hospital in Romford marked his 100th day in hospital by presenting him and his mum Kim Bull, 31, with a certificate and present.

Much to Kim and dad Robin’s delight, they were able to take Ronnie to their home in Hornchurch just days later.

Ronnie was born at St Thomas’s Hospital in London and has had more health issues than most to deal with in his young life. He was born with an exomphalos, where his abdomen had not fully developed and his bowel was protruding. He had his first operation to correct this when he was three days old.

He also had to have two hernias repaired when he was just a month old and in July, he had surgery to close holes in his heart.

Following stays at St Thomas’ and the Evelina London Children’s Hospital, he spent eight weeks on our neonatal unit at Queen’s Hospital before going home on 29 July.

Mum Kim said: “He surprised us all with his recovery from his heart surgery and I could have a cuddle much quicker than I thought, which was lovely as when he was born I had to wait a week for my first cuddle.

“All the doctors and nurses were lovely but we were so excited to get home, we had a lot of people who wanted to meet him.”

Gill Watson, Senior Sister on Tropical Lagoon children’s ward, said: “It was a small gesture from us so we could do something nice for the family, particularly as little Ronnie hasn’t had the easiest of starts.

“He’s such a gorgeous baby, we all loved having him, but of course we’re much happier now that he’s at home where he belongs and is doing so well.”
