Kelly Murray, 43, married her long-term partner in a special ceremony at Queen’s Hospital today (Thursday 24 November).

Kelly and new husband Richard McGoverne, 33, got engaged last Christmas and brought forward their planned wedding after Kelly was told her lung cancer had spread and could no longer be treated on 9 November this year.

We worked quickly to help bring together everything they needed to host their wedding in St Luke’s Chapel at our hospital, which was attended by around 40 family and friends including Kelly’s 12-year-old son Lenny, who accompanied her down the aisle.

Kelly said: “Lenny wanted us to get married so we could be a family and he really wanted to help organise it, which he did.

“I was a bit nervous beforehand, but also excited to be getting married. It was nice to have everyone together.”

Richard added: “It was beautiful, and it was lovely that our families could be with us too.”

The whole family made sure the day was a celebration, with Kelly’s mum, close friends and sisters Sam Arthur and Michelle McSweeney helping her get glammed up, her 16-year-old niece Brooke Martin-Glover also helped by putting on her make-up.

The couple, of Bonham Road, Dagenham, met three years ago after being introduced on a blind date set up by a friend.

Kelly’s diagnosis was even more tragic for her family as it came on the year anniversary that her sister Tracey Arthur, 49, was told her lung cancer could no longer be treated. She died in February this year.
