Making a regular gift

Why regular gifts make a difference

By choosing to give a regular monthly donation, you will be helping us to plan and make long-term improvements for our patients, their families and our staff.  A regular gift allows us to plan because we know, day in day out, that we will have a steady income stream that we can rely on.

regular giving

Regular gifts allow us to plan

  • refurbishment projects in our hospitals
  • the purchase of specialist medical equipment
  • innovation in research and training
  • enhancements in technology and information

What your money could buy

Party

  • £5 a month could help us pay for play therapy for a sick child
  • £10 a month could help us fund a patient to take part in a clinical trial
  • £50 a month could help us pay for a RITA TV for an elderly ward

Our aim is not to subsidise the core NHS budget – our goal is to enhance services. With our charity, you have the benefit of knowing that your donations will be spent in your local hospitals, and could benefit friends, family and your local community long into the future.

Set up a monthly or an annual Direct Debit securely online.

Thanks, and don’t forget that ticking the Gift Aid box will make your donation grow!

Make your gift worth more, at no extra cost to you! If you are a UK taxpayer, under the Governments Gift Aid scheme we can reclaim the tax you have already paid on your gift(s). This means that your donation can increase in value by 25p for every £1 donated.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I give?

Any amount you can give helps our work enormously – even the smallest amount. A gift of just £5 a month would make such a vital difference. The more that you can give, the more we can make our hospitals even better. It is not so much the amount of the gift that is important to us, but the regularity. We promise to spend your donation wisely.

How else can I regularly donate?

As well as making a regular gift by completing the form you can also donate by contacting our Fundraising Team on 01708 774825, our team will be happy to set up your gift.

Can I cancel my monthly donation if my circumstances change?

Yes, you can cancel anytime. Just contact us on 01708 774825 or email: bhrut.charity@nhs.net and one of our team will be happy to help.

If you have any other queries, please get in touch!

Leaving a legacy

couple sat on a bench

Our charity vision is to support our hospitals and make them better equipped and more comfortable for all who need our care both now and in the future. By choosing to leave a legacy, you will make a huge impact - helping us to turn our vision into reality.

Making a gift in a will is a personal matter and one that can balance providing for loved ones alongside a gracious gesture to support charitable projects. Your solicitor will be able to guide you on this. Big or small, it can help transform care for thousands of local patients and their families for years to come and improve the wellbeing of our staff.

A legacy allows us to plan:

  • refurbishment projects in our hospitals
  • the purchase of more specialist medical equipment
  • funding for research and training
  • enhancements in technology and information

Leaving money to a charity in your will can make financial sense too because charitable gifts are exempt from inheritance tax, so it can reduce the tax on your estate. Your financial advisor can help you with the latest in estate planning.

In 2019 we received an amazing legacy from Mary Maud White who had been a volunteer for the cancer department in Oldchurch Hospital.  This legacy enabled us to buy our Trust its very first Da Vinci surgery arm bringing robotic surgery to Queen's Hospital.

We recommend using a qualified professional to help you create your Will. This makes sure your wishes are clear and the Will is legally sound.

If you already have a Will, a solicitor can easily amend it for you by writing a codicil to file alongside the existing Will.

Where possible, we encourage broad support, such as choosing to support the charity as a whole (so we can direct your fund to our areas of greatest need) or one of our hospitals or larger medical areas.

This ensures your donation is flexible enough to adjust to future advances in medical technology and be used where the need is greatest.

You should name the charity, King George & Queen’s Hospitals Charity, and include the registered charity number (1059455).

If you wish to specify a particular hospital or area it is helpful to say 'I wish to support …' as this means if the area is re-named, or medical technology changes substantially, we can ensure your gift can still be used.

There are three main ways of making a donation through your Will:

  • A residuary legacy is a percentage of your estate - you can include your loved ones and charitable causes and will know that the value of these gifts will not decrease with inflation
  • A pecuniary legacy is a fixed sum of money
  • You can also choose to leave a specific gift - such as a building, piece of land or shares

We would welcome the chance to talk to you about how a gift in your Will could help across our hospitals.

If you would like to find out more, please contact us, or ask your solicitor to contact us.

Gifts in kind

staff

We are very grateful for all offers of gifts for our patients and our staff; however, because of the nature of hospitals, unfortunately we are not always able to accept everything you may wish to donate.

In general, donated goods should be brand new.

Issues such as suitability, risk of choking and infection control are all important for us to consider.

If we can't accept your gift you may like to sell the items (you could try eBay or even a good old-fashioned car boot sale) and then donate the funds you have raised.

We tend to receive many more gifts at Christmas time, especially for our Children’s Department and these are very much appreciated. This creates a lovely seasonal atmosphere; however we would encourage groups and companies to consider giving at other times of year as well - when there is less going on in our hospitals.

Things to remember

  • We encourage support throughout the year, not just at Christmas
  • Our Children's Department receives wonderful support, but other hospital areas also welcome gifts, particularly to entertain older patients
  • All gifts need to be new and unwrapped so we know what we are giving, as many patients have individual needs
  • Please, no giant soft toys, but we can take small new ones
  • Over the Christmas period we tend to have a lot more babies in the Maternity Department, so gifts that are appropriate, such as new rattles, socks or bibs, are very helpful.

We are also always in need of bravery presents to distract sick children when undergoing scary procedures, for example:

  • Noisy putty
  • Little art and craft items
  • Miniature pinball
  • Toiletries or gifts for teenagers
  • Sensory toys

Please get in touch if you require more details; we appreciate you thinking of us.

Remembering someone special

Remembering someone special poster

Making a donation in memory of a loved one is a special way of commemorating and honouring their life, while supporting the hospitals that have looked after them.

The following information for families and funeral homes will help you if you are thinking of making an ‘In Memoriam’ donation or making a collection at a funeral, but please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to speak to someone personally.

For families

You may wish to honour the memory of a loved one by making a donation or raising funds to support the hospital area that cared for them – or that they cared about.

Asking friends and family to donate at the funeral is a lasting and meaningful way to remember the person you have lost.

You could create a personalised in memory fundraising page that acts as a tribute to their life – where friends can share memories and make a donation using one of the links below:

If you would like to receive our Donating in Memory leaflet and/or giving envelopes, or if you need any help or advice, just get in touch and we will support you in any way we can to raise funds in tribute of your loved one.

When all donations have been received, we will let you know the total amount raised.

Alternatively, you may prefer to simply make a donation – or set up regular giving to donate monthly or annually, perhaps marking a special date in your loved one’s life.

We hope that in this difficult time the positive action of donating and helping to make a difference for other patients is of some comfort to you and your family.

To talk about how you can achieve the memorial that will mean the most to you and your family and friends, please contact us.

Funeral services

We are incredibly grateful to the many families who wish to remember their loved ones through supporting the hospitals that cared for them.

Our charity covers all the wards and departments in Queen’s Hospital in Romford and King George Hospital in Ilford.

Donations that can be used across our hospitals where the need is greatest are very useful.

Alternatively, if the family would like the collection to benefit a particular hospital, ward or department, just let us know.

Volunteering

Many NHS organisations and charities need help from volunteers and we are no exception.

We’re always delighted to hear from people or groups who may have some spare time on their hands to help us. We have various ways that you can get involved and we would welcome your skills as you become part of our Charity Community Team.

Ambassadors’ Forum

Ambassadors

Our Charity Ambassadors help us to raise awareness of our charity work and encourage others to get involved in our fundraising activities. We think of our ambassadors as an amazing extended fundraising team.

We meet up four times a year to discuss our achievements and ideas for new events. The ambassadors then find ways that they can help to promote our work in their own business and social areas.

Whether you have regular times available or would prefer to volunteer on a casual basis, or if you’d like to know more about the Ambassadors’ Forum, please give Marina a call on 01708 774866 for a chat.

Why I give regularly

The Pashley family Several years ago, Kevin and Della Pashley’s son Matt was playing for Witham Town FC when he collapsed and was rushed to Basildon Hospital.  He was then transferred to Queen’s Hospital for emergency surgery when bleeding was discovered on his brain.

The family were so grateful for the care and support he received at our hospital they decided to raise some money among family and friends, and even dad Kevin’s workmates at Ford, to donate to our charity.

Kevin said: “His recovery was a miracle, when he first came round from his operation he couldn’t see or feel his legs.

“The staff were amazing, he had his operation at 3am, immediately when he got to Queen’s, and that’s what saved him. He had 24/7 care and they never left his side that night.  I think that was essential to his recovery.”

Kevin and Della were also grateful to be able to spend the first few nights of Matt’s stay in our overnight facilities especially for families of our most critically ill patients, so they were able to constantly remain close to Matt’s bedside.

Kevin added: “Our family will never forget the care given at Queen’s Hospital and that is why I give a donation regularly every month.  It’s our way of giving something back.”

You can easily set up a monthly or an annual Direct Debit securely online here.
